Certificates turn a one-day workshop into a career asset for your attendees. Here's how to issue them properly.

A participant who receives a well-designed certificate posts it on LinkedIn. LinkedIn post gets seen by 500 of their connections. Three of those connections DM them asking where they got it. That's three warm leads for your next workshop — generated automatically, weeks after the event.

The certificate is free marketing. But it's also a professional obligation: if you're issuing one, it should be accurate, it should be based on verified attendance, and it should look good.

Why Certificates Matter — More Than You Think

CPD (Continuing Professional Development) hours In healthcare, education, finance, law, and many other regulated professions in Pakistan, practitioners are required to accumulate CPD hours annually. A workshop that issues a CPD certificate with stated hours completed is a genuinely valuable professional product.

LinkedIn and résumé For early-career professionals, certificates of attendance from workshops and masterclasses are tangible evidence of initiative. A certificate from a respected trainer or organisation is worth more than a line in a bio.

Internal corporate training When companies send employees to external workshops, HR departments require documentation. A formal certificate of attendance satisfies that requirement.

Yoga and wellness teacher training For practitioners working toward certification hours (Yoga Alliance, for example), verifiable attendance records and certificates are mandatory. Your records have to stand up to scrutiny.

What a Proper Certificate Should Include

A professional certificate of attendance includes:

Do not include: generic filler text, stock images of graduation caps, or Comic Sans.

The Attendance-Certificate Link: Only Who Actually Showed Up

This is critical and commonly skipped.

Certificates of attendance should only go to people who attended. Not people who registered and didn't show up. Not people who were there for half the day. If your certificate carries any professional weight, it needs to be accurate.

This is why check-in records matter. When you use Tikkit's QR check-in:

Export your attended list, filter it, generate certificates for that list only. Clean, verifiable, defensible.

Designing Your Certificate

A few practical options depending on your volume and budget:

Canva (free, easiest) Search "certificate of attendance" — there are excellent templates. Customise with your branding, participant name, and event details. Use bulk create (CSV upload) to generate individual certificates for each attendee automatically.

Microsoft Word mail merge If you're more comfortable with Word: design your certificate once, set up a mail merge from your attendance CSV, and print or export PDFs. Slightly more technical but works well at scale.

Custom design (Illustrator or Photoshop) For organisations that run training programmes regularly, a professionally designed certificate template is worth commissioning once. It becomes an asset used across all your programmes.

Third-party certificate platforms Canva Pro has batch certificate generation. Certifier.io and Accredible are specialised platforms for high-volume professional certificate issuance (relevant for training companies running multiple programmes monthly).

Distributing Certificates

Digital (PDF by email) — recommended

Physical (printed) For premium programmes, corporate training, and yoga teacher training, a physical certificate adds ceremony. Print on quality cardstock (not regular A4), use a folio or envelope.

Via Tikkit profile Participants can access their certificate directly from their Tikkit profile if you've enabled this feature.

For Ongoing Training Programmes — Track Hours Cumulatively

If you run a series of workshops or a structured training programme, keep a running record of each participant's attendance and hours completed. Issue a final certificate when they complete the full programme.

This is particularly important for yoga teacher training (200-hour or 300-hour programmes), leadership development series, and professional skills tracks where the total hours matter as much as the individual session.

FAQ

Can I issue a CPD-recognised certificate from my workshop? For a certificate to be CPD-recognised in a formal sense, you typically need to be registered with a CPD accreditation body relevant to your field. However, many professionals record self-directed CPD activities — and a certificate from a reputable provider, even without formal CPD accreditation, is accepted by many employers and professional bodies.

What if an attendee says they attended but wasn't checked in? Check your Tikkit attendance records. If they were marked as attended, issue the certificate. If not, and you have no other record of their attendance, explain your policy. For borderline cases (arrived late, left early), use your judgement based on the programme requirements.

Can I add a QR code on the certificate that verifies it's genuine? Yes — this is an excellent addition for professional training providers. The QR code can link to a verification page on your website. This is worth implementing if you're running a programme where credentials could be falsified.

How long should I keep attendance records? For professional training programmes: minimum 5 years. For general workshops: 2 years. Participants occasionally need to reference past attendance for insurance, immigration, or employment purposes.

What's the difference between a certificate of attendance and a certificate of completion? Attendance: confirms the person was present. Completion: confirms the person met specific requirements (passed an assessment, completed all modules). For most workshops, attendance is appropriate. For structured training with a tested outcome, completion is more accurate.
